Terowie

After heading south from Peterborough, we came across the historic town of Terowie (from an Aboriginal word meaning “Hidden Water”. 

There is a free camping area here with a welcoming sign on the gate!

The camp is set up in what was once a thriving “change of gauge” railway station.  It is now a few rundown buildings, lots of prickles and some plaques with the history of the town.

 

 

We also found an apple tree that was loaded with apples!  The children had fun picking and eating them! 

A rare treat!

 

Jessica found that the better apples were near the top of the tree!

The playground across the road was great for the kids and dogs to test their skills, run off some excess energy or just to relax!

After a good nights rest, Jireh was ready for another day of travel!

Making Flat Bread

When we run out of bread, we love making flat bread.  It’s so easy and tastes delicious especially when fried in butter!  All we use is flour (half white and half wholemeal), Baking Pwd (or self raising flour), eggs and water!  This time I added coconut and some sugar!

The Superdogs Trick Show

 

So the girls have spent a lot of time training their dogs to do tricks.  Last year they performed at The Goomeri Pumpkin Festival and at the Kenilworth Show.  This week they have put together a video of what they can do.  All the dogs have been trained by the girls!

Sparkie, a Kelpie x Border Collie, is three years old and knows more than 40 tricks!  We bought her for Jasmine on her 12th birthday. She will tell you it’s the best present she ever got before or since!

 

 

 

 

Tess, a 2 1/2 year old Border Collie x Kelpie, is a high energy dog.  Jessica got Tess for her 11th birthday and has taught her about 30 tricks and she is learning more all the time!

 

 

 

 

 

Lassie, an almost 2 year old working Border Collie, is super high energy.  Her signature trick is known as The Crazy Jump which you can see in the video.  Chana inherited Lassie when she was 8 and Lassie was 6 months old. 

 

 

 

 

 

Sambo is a 6 month old Border Collie x German Shepherd.  Chantel got Sambo when he was 8 weeks old and immediately fell in love with him!  He was a surprise gift we picked up at the Kenilworth Show.  He is a fast learner and loves to please Chantel.

Where have all the children gone

 

It never ceases to amaze me that we can spend all day at a playground and never see any other children.  Granted, most kids are back in school now, but that does not explain why we sometimes don’t even see any children at all, not even pre-schoolers!

Our children love to go to the playground!  We can and do spend all day there often!  They go in and out of the bus as they please, alternating between outside play and inside play.

I feel sad for the children that spend all day in a classroom, then go home to spend the rest of the day indoors.  I know some will spend time playing in the backyard, but we haven’t even seen much of that in our travels.  It seems a lot of children only get to have outside fun on weekends or school holidays.  How sad!  I remember growing up I’d stop by the playground on my way home from school (at about 7 years old), or we’d go out after dinner on warm summer evenings and walk to the playground!

My challenge to anyone who wants one is … take your child(ren) to the playground or some place where they can run and play uninhibited at least 4 times this month!  Have fun yourself too!

So we finally left the boring caravan park at about 2pm! We stopped in Port Augusta for shopping and to give the children and dogs a run around.

We continued on our way, and found a great spot to camp far enough out of town for us to feel safe seeing as this was our first time free camping since we had the rocks thrown through our windows.

Our first night off the grid was hot and humid!  Took a while for everyone to settle after being used to air-conditioning and to trust we were going to be safe enough to relax!  Once all were settled and asleep it was a peaceful night.

Today, much to the delight of everyone, we revisited a playground we were at about 2 months ago!

Lots of fun time outside … all settled easily into bed … I’m sure they’ll all wake ready for more adventures tomorrow!
